Progress Despite Unexpected News and Wrinkles

Although it was really cold this morning (29 degrees) with a hard frost, the sunrise was spectacular again.

It seemed to promise that we were going to have a great day. I got up early to get started with the rest of the packing and found that Natalie had been really busy baking the night before. She left these cookies for the family...

The rest all had warning labels...

I guess we know who the important people are! :)

We got started right away with the necessary laundry, cleaning, cooking and packing. I made egg salad for the trip...

I also have chicken salad and apple dip ready to go. Natalie baked more cookies...

She also made pumpkin bars and a cake to make cake pops once we get there. We have quite a pile of treats ready to take to North Carolina! Here are just some of them...

I hope those boys are hungry!!!

Jim and Richard were gone for the day. Richard went to West Bend for the wedding of his friend and Jim went in to work until about noon. Right about the time Jim got home for lunch he got a call from Richard saying the wheel on his truck had seized up and he couldn't move it. It was parked in West Bend. Jim talked to Brian who felt that the problem was probably something Jim couldn't fix on his own so we rented a trailer and Jim went down to pick it up.

He dropped it off at Brian's and as long as he had the trailer he decided to haul his two door (which still has the broken timing belt) and the red car (which wasn't fixed like we thought it was) down to Hustisford as well. Hopefully Leo can work on them while we are gone. It wasn't how Jim planned to spend his day but it worked out better to have it happen this way than if Richard was on his way to or from New Ulm. God continues to bless us in this way when it comes to vehicle issues!

While the guys were gone Natalie and I were able to finish the last of the shopping and packing and the only thing left was to pack up the dogs and Peanutbutter for their trip to their pet-sitters.

I was really impressed with how well behaved the dogs were through the whole process. They knew something was going on but see how nicely they are sitting on the correct side of the gate without even having to be told? Good dogs!

Soon it was time to say good-bye...

...and send them on their merry way to Melissa's. I hope she knows what she's in for! :)

(Don't ya love the glowing eyes? Very Halloweinier, tee hee...)

Last to leave will be Gizmo and Peanutbutter who are staying with a different friend of ours. We are following a divide and conquer plan.

It looks like we are ready to go inspite of all the vehicle complications.

Right at the end of the day we got two pieces of bad news. The first was that our neighbor was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She begins chemo in a few weeks. We are so sad about that!

Shortly after receiving that news Jim got phone calls from both his brother and sister saying that his mom was in the hospital. Her alcoholism is finally catching up with her but she is still argumentative and in denial. It sounds like now she is giving her siblings the same hard time she gave us. Her medical condition is not good. This is hard news to take. It feels like we are back to where we were about eight years ago.

It's time to leave this day on a lighter note. In spite of all the chaos and stressful things around it my little white Christmas cactus is quietly but persistently growing buds. It is pretty much covered with them!

Life goes on. :)
